Background on Algal Toxin
Algal toxins are naturally occurring compounds produced by certain algae and can be divided into two main groups:
- Cyanotoxins are produced by cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) and include microcystins, cylindrocystins, ichthyotoxins, stonehouse clam toxins and arthrocystins.
- Marine toxins are marine biotoxins produced by certain types of algae (e.g., methanogens and diatoms) and include staphylococcus clam toxin, chondroitin, okadaic acid, phragmitoxin, and ciguatoxin.
These toxins can contaminate both freshwater and marine environments, especially during algal blooms. In addition, they can accumulate in the water column and pose a significant threat to human and animal health. Detection and monitoring of algal toxins is essential to prevent their harmful effects and to ensure the safety of the aquatic environment, drinking water sources and the food supply.
