The Total Hardness Chemical Test Kit-100 consists of superior quality, pre-measured reagents that facilitate quick and precise calculations of total hardness using the chemical test kit. These reagents utilize the EDTA titration technique to ascertain total hardness in the form of calcium carbonate.
To gauge total hardness, the sample solution is initially adjusted to a pH level of 10. The calmagite color indicator is introduced, which interacts with calcium and magnesium to form weak complexes in this alkaline environment, generating a red colored complex. In addition to that, the EDTA titrant solution, interacts with the remaining unbound magnesium and calcium ions to create complexes. Once all of the free magnesium and calcium ions have been complexed, the excess EDTA preferentially removes the ions bound with the calmagite color indicator, forming a stronger complex. The irreversible color transformation from red to blue caused by the removal of these metal ions from the indicator, implies the completion of the titration process. The total hardness as mg/L CaCO3 is determined by the volume of titrant needed to reach this definitive point. These reagents are compatible with samples that present an estimated total hardness scope of between 0.0 to 30.0 mg/L and 0 to 300 mg/L CaCO3.
