Quinolones are antimicrobial agents effective in the treatment of selected community-acquired and nosocomial infections. Quinolones are bactericidal and exhibit concentration-dependent killing. Quinolones are widely distributed throughout the body. Tissue penetration is higher than the concentration achieved in plasma, stool, bile, prostatic tissue, and lung tissue. Quinolones also penetrate well in urine and kidneys when renal clearance is the route of drug elimination. Quinolones are associated with a post-antibiotic effect in a number of bacteria, principally gram-negative. Quinolones you find in food can include: Enrofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, Danofloxacin, Pefloxacin, Enoxacin, and Fleroxacin. The most frequent side-effects are gastrointestinal reactions (nausea, dyspepsia, vomiting) and CNS reactions such as dizziness, insomnia and headache.
