Chloramphenicol is implicated in the generation of aplastic anaemia in humans and causes reproductive / hepatotoxic effects in animals. It is banned for use in food-producing animals in the US and Canada. The FDA has increased its sampling of imported food to prevent foods contaminated with chloramphenicol from entering the United States.
